Leonard Mendoza History of Drunken Brawls

Commerce City Council Member Leonard Mendoza is the central figure in a brawl that involved at least seven individuals that include four Commerce city council members at the Indian Wells resort during a conference by the Contract Cities Association on May 17.

During the June 4, Commerce city council meeting, the bizarre theatrics continued in the latest saga that started in Indian Wells with a brawl. Council Member Leonard Mendoza supporters were beginning a “Justice for Council Member Mendoza” protest during City Council, bringing more controversy to the city.

“To be honest with you, it’s pretty embarrassing, the fact that our officials are doing this,” Commerce resident Hector Maravilla told KTLA.
“It’s not the first time one of our officials had this situation happen to him. He did get knocked out at Maguey bar not too long ago,” Maravilla said.

Council Member Leonard Mendoza is no stranger to drunken fights. In January of this year, he was apparently drinking at a local bar known as the Maguey Sports Bar & Grill in Commerce where witnesses state that Mendoza was intoxicated and began a fight with other patrons.

Based on the YouTube post of that evening, Mendoza was knocked unconscious and needed to be carted out on a gurney by paramedics.

Council Member Mendoza also denied at city council that he was involved in the altercation at the bar and stated he fell and slipped and injured himself. While he did not file a police report, the video shows that he is bleeding from his face and he yells to the camera, “They hurt me,” as paramedics carry him away for his injuries.

There is a consistency with allegations that Mendoza was the aggressor at India Wells while drunk and was knocked unconscious by a defender just as what occurred at Maguey Bar in January.

Both the mayor and vice mayor are planning on pressing charges against Mendoza.
